Madagascar (5R) 동쪽에 위치한 프랑스령 섬.  <HL1XP>

Tromelin(FR/T) Island is one of the most remote Islands in Indian Ocean. It belongs to the  Eparse Achipelago. The ocean depth surrounding the island reaches 4000 meters. Its geographical coordinates are 15 degrees 53 minutes S. and 54 degrees 29 minutes E. Tromelin island is completely flat and the sea can be seen from any part of the island.
This island is nowadays uninhabited but was inhabited for a while by misfortunate sailors and slaves. The only written record we have on any Tromelin settlement was from the sailors of "L'Utile" an old French battleship that had been converted to a transport vessel for materials and african slaves.
It sank after facing a terrible storm in 1761. The crew survived.
They managed to built a new boat to reach Mauritius(3B8) island but the capacity of this boat was limited to 122 people.
Ninety African slaves had to stay on the island with the promise of a new vessel coming back to take them away from this hell.
We don't know what happened then or even whether the boat reached Mauritius.
Apparently, even if the crew did successfully reach Mauritius,  they never asked for a rescue boat for the poor slaves still stranded on Tromelin.
15 years later in 1776, a corvette called "la Dauphine" commanded by "the Knight de Tromelin" stopped by this island which was now called Tromelin Island.
They rescued the sole survivors which consisted of 7 women and 1 child ; 83 people had perished.

 Tromelin island에 얽힌 애절한 역사소개

Tromelin island는 인도양에 위치한 아주 고립된 작은 섬입니다. 섬 주변의 바다 깊이는 약 4000 미터 정도로 완전히 평평한 작은 섬이기에 어느곳에서도 주변 바다를 바라볼수 있습니다.

지금은 아무도 살고 있지않지만 한때 운없는 항해가나 노예들이 체류하기도 했습니다. 역사 상에 기록된 유일한 체류기록은 한때는 프랑스 전함이었다가 물자및 노예 수송선으로 사용되었던 "L"Utile"호에 얽힌 이야기입니다.

"1761년, 지금으로부터 약 240년전 "L"Utile"호는 Tromelin섬 부근을 항해하던중 폭풍우에 휩쓸려 가라앉게 되었고 생존자들은 운좋게도 인근에 있는 섬으로 상륙하였습니다.

다수의 생존자들은 인근에 있는 Mauritius island(3B8)로 도달하기 위해 배를 건조하기 시작했으나 배의 승선 인원은 122명으로 한정되어 있었습니다. (그당시에도 배의 안전을 위한 승선인원을 그 와중에도 지킨 모양입니다.물론 백인들의 안전을 위해서였겠지만요!,Hi)

서양인들과 함께 생존해있던 90명의 흑인 노예들은 이 와중에 승선인원 초과로 제외 되었고 백인들이 Mauritius에 도달하면 새로운 배를 보내어 이 지옥과도같은 고립된 섬에서 구조해주겠다는 말을 철석같이 믿으며 기다릴수 밖에 없었던 것입니다.

섬에서 탈출했던 백인들이 Mauritius에 무사히 도달했는지에 대한 기록은 남아있지 않습니다. 그러나 확실한 것은 백인들이 탈출에 성공했다 하더라도 Tromelin에 남아있던 가난한 흑인 노예들은 구출하기 위해 배를 보내주지는 않았을 것입니다.

그후 15년이 흐른 1776년, Tromelin남작이 지휘하는 "la Dauphine" 전함이 이섬에 기항하게 되었고 이런 연유로 Tromelin island라는 이름을 얻게 되었읍니다. 섬에 상륙한 선원들은 15년 동안 섬에 남아 생존해왔던 7명의 여자와 한명의 아이를 구출해내게 되었습니다. 83명은 모두 사망하였으며 한명의 아이는 그동안 섬에서 태어난 아이였습니다.(즉 출생지가 Tromelin island인 아이였던거죠)

그들은 Muritius island로 이송되었고 그곳에서 자유를 얻고 연금을 받으며 살아갔다는 이야기입니다.  <HL1IWD>
